Foundations ~ Liquid Or Powder?
When it comes to our skin, all we know is that we want it to look as flawless and natural as possible. As makeup has evolved over the years, foundations have become one of the best creations for evening out skin tone, creating a smooth canvas and an overall healthy glow. A consistent difficulty that women encounter is the understanding of what types of foundations they should use, and how to achieve the coverage they are looking for.
LIQUID
Liquid foundation is great during the winter months as your skin has a tendency to be a bit drier. There are many consistencies in liquid foundations that can pre-determine your coverage. Going with a foundation that is a bit denser allows you to vary the consistency yourself by adding a few drops of moisturizer to the foundation, which gives you a lighter coverage. This also saves you dollars and cuts down on your carbon footprint by making your bottle of foundation last longer. In picking the best moisturizer for the job try blending it first on your wrist to ensure that it does not leave an oily residue. One of the moisturizers that I like working with is Suzanne Aux Bains Regenerating Night Cream because it is not too oily and provides a good overall finish to the skin. Mix in the palm of your hand with a small to medium foundation brush until there is no separation. Apply gently to the face making sure to blend all edges. This technique will give you a more dewy radiant look and feel. If you feel you are too shiny, blot with tissue and apply powder to the bridge and creases of the nose, forehead and chin. Be sure to not over powder. If a heavier coverage is desired apply liquid foundation directly to moisturized skin.
Two of my frequent favorites are:
POWDER
Powder foundations are great in the summer months when your skin tends to be a bit oilier. I like powder foundations in a loose form, as I believe it gives a lighter finish than a pressed powder foundation and is easier to control. It is also important to apply powder foundation on a well-moisturized face as this makes for a more fluid thorough application. Be sure to blot skin before applying powdered foundation to avoid any residue that can cause an overall blotchy effect. You can achieve a heavier consistency by applying with a flat head kabuki brush, which pushes the powder gently into the skin. For a more translucent look you can use a large powder brush.
A couple of my favorites are:
It is always fun to play around and try new products. Have fun and enjoy!

Oct 27th, 2009I really like using powder foundations because I feel that my skin can breathe while still looking radiant. I love how I can layer it on for more coverage if I feel that I need it…….Jane Iredale’s Amazing Base is seriously one of my favorite products especially because it has an SPF 20 that helps to protect my fair skin! Thank you Christy for this post!!!! I look forward to experiencing the other foundations that you have suggested

Oct 27th, 2009My skin really seems to be loving the mineral foundations right now. I was wondering if you could recommend which brand(s) of kabuki brushes both flat and rounded to use? Thank you!

Oct 28th, 2009Great!
Jane Iredale the Handi brush has a flat head and is not quite as dense as Alison Raffaele’s rounded Kabuki brush.
Both great brushes.
Thanks for reading my blog!

Jan 7th, 2010I am a huge fan of Alima Pure foundation – in the winter months, I make sure that I am very well moisturized, and then after I apply the powder, I spritz my face with water – it gives it a dewy look and it doesn’t feel dry.

Feb 21st, 2010I use Jane Iredale’s Amazing Base in Natural. I’m able to apply with a powder brush in seconds. Everyone comments on how lovely my skin looks (and at my age that’s ‘amazing’ in itself). The minerals literally glide onto my skin leaving a healthy glow. I like to use just a little, even if I’m not going anywhere because I feel like my skin really benefits. Offers high factor sun protection too.
