How To Choose The Right Makeup Brushes

How To Choose The Right Makeup Brushes

Having the right set of makeup brushes on hand is the difference between having years of really great application and down right horrible experiences when it comes to applying your makeup. You can spend loads of money on your makeup, but if the right tools are not in your hands to apply them you won’t end up with the results you were initially hoping for. While I am on set my makeup brushes are what keep my application controlled and even. With these few quick tips for buying brushes you will be back to having fun while applying your makeup and loving how you look in no time.

What materials are best?

When most of us think about makeup brushes we automatically assume that animal hair is the way to go. But when it comes to going green with your brushes you have to think about leaving the animal hair and cruelty behind. In finding brushes that perform well while also offering you some peace of mind, you will find yourself loving Taklon brushes just as much as I do. An added bonus – synthetic brushes are hypoallergenic.

What are the best shapes and sizes?

Flax Sticks Special Effects Brush Set
Eye Shadow – A flat brush for all over color and a tapered dome brush work wonders for hugging the natural curve of your eye. An Eye Smudger allows for subtle definition and smoky drama. These 3 brushes offer optimum results for creating a diverse eye.

Alima #33 Angle Liner/Brow Brush
Eyeliner & Eyebrows – A flat angled brush works well for this as it helps you to follow a precise line. This brush works great for both so you can double up.

Jane Iredale Foundation Brush
Foundation – A flat synthetic brush works great for applying and blending, as it also helps to cut down on the amount of waste you get when using your hands.

Ecotools Powder Brush
Finishing Powder – I actually prefer a sponge or puff as this allows you to work the powder into your skin in a controlled way. However if a brush is what you prefer here is a favorite.

Aveda Lip and Concealer Brush
Concealer – This brush is a necessity for reaching under your lashes, around the nose and any imperfections that might need additional coverage.

Alima Pure Blush Brush
Cheeks – I like a brush that has longer bristles so your color can be loosely applied. This way you aren’t stuck with a localized deposit of color and you can use this brush to easily help you blend.

Environmental Retractable Lip Brush
Lips – A small and thin lip brushes allows for a seamless application. A retractable brush is great as it keeps bristles protected while keeping your makeup bag clean.

Keep them clean

As soon as you are finished with applying your makeup, wash your hands and brushes at the same time so they are clean and dry for your next application. Using warm water, run the bristles under the water and apply a small amount of all natural liquid soap. Work the soap into the bristles, rinse and repeat as necessary to be sure to remove all makeup and residue. Rinse thoroughly. Remove excess water with a towel and leave brushes to dry on a flat surface.
