Spring Summer 2010 Beauty Trends

The New York Spring fashion shows proved to be overflowing with beauty looks and trends that have left me inspired for days. With the 80’s still leading the way with bright flashy palettes and bold application, the Spring 2010 runways were undoubtable ruled by one of our most beloved inspirational decades. From loud and avant-garde to the pure and polished, the colors and tones of Spring awaken us to a season filled with new beauty revelations.

Derek Lam unveiled the most interesting with what looks to be an apricot, purple and silver blue laced eye, 80’s inspired but a much softer color palette than fall.

Donna Karan showcased a gorgeous muted palette with a stunningly bold white eyeliner applied only to the tops of eyelids and a nude barely there lip.

Rag & Bone had one of the most wearable makeup looks, with a muted mouth and coppery eye.

Marc By Marc Jacobs gave the lips a nice pop. Keeping up with an all time Spring favorite, as all models flaunted a perfectly pink lip.

Kate and Laura from Rodarte were inspired by the California Condors and how they must scavage to survive, hence the VERY dark mouth with a cherry blood center.

Christian Dior inspired by Spring revealed bold pastels – Lavender eyes with a bright reddish pink mouth.

Marc Jacobs being more about a character, feeling very geisha inspired with a white shadow application going from center of eyelids straight into the eyebrow, while bold black liner lined the eyes.

Cynthia Roley featured a whimsical pastel pink eye against navy, purple and green watercolor prints.

At Vera Wang a heavy brow was the focus with simple yet flawless skin and a natural lip.

Metallic Palette ~ Spring Summer 2010

Bright colors and metallics were all over the runways this Spring season. Metallic gold, silver, and bronze will be your best bet as these eye-catching, exciting nail polishes were found on runway models from the likes of Oscar De La Renta, Chanel and Michael Angel.

Here are a few of my favorites:

1) Shown on nails – Zoya Nail Color in Rea – Metallic Lavender

2) Zoya Nail Color in Goldie – Metallic Gold

3) Zoya Nail Color in Richelle – Metallic Bronze

4) Zoya Nail Color in Freja – Metallic Silver

CC Tip: A good way to show off this season’s metallic nails is to shimmer up your skin with Burt’s Bees Radiance Body Lotion, a true favorite of mine.

Lavender Love ~ Spring Summer 2010

This Spring Christian Dior showed off a gorgeous palette of pastels with a modern 1940’s twist, consisting of light luminous make-up with eyes shadowed in jade and lilac with a sultry, pinkish-red lip. Keeping it light on the face with just a soft highlight on cheekbones, Christian Dior’s ready-to-wear runway look has completely captured the essence of Spring.

1) Apply Couleur Caramel Eye Shadow in Pearly Violet #19 all over eyelids, taking it just below the brow bone. Jane Iredale Eye Shadow in Oyster is applied under the brow while using Jane Iredale Eye Shadow in Dark Suede on the outer brow bone – both shadow colors are found in Jane Iredale’s Daytime Eye Shadow Kit.

2) For a more sheer finish, tinted moisturizer is applied using Tarte Cosmetics Smooth Operator. Be sure to apply evenly. If a heavier finish is desired, apply Jane Iredale Concealer in your shade of choice.

3) Curl lashes and apply a light coat of Jane Iredale Longest Lash Mascara to upper lashes only. This allows the eyeshadow to pop, and not be overpowered by heavy mascara.

4) RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in Illusive is applied softly to the apples of cheeks, keeping the focus on the eyes and lips.

5) Use Jane Iredale Lipstick in Carrie to create a full and vuloptuous lip.

CC Tip: I like to apply eyeshadow first in case any shadow drops onto the skin. You can whisk off any shadow that has gone astray with remover to ensure that you don’t destroy your finished skin.

Eyeliner is always going to be in fashion, as it is a powerful beauty trend seen in nearly every decade. An infallible staple, eyeliner should be found in every makeup bag, so LINE UP! From Roberto Cavalli to Christian Dior and Marc Jacobs, bold eyeliner ran rampant on the Spring 2010 runways.

1) Apply ZUZU Luxe Concealer all over eyelids to create a primer, then follow with a light dusting of Dr. Hauschka’s Translucent Face Powder over eye. This step is very important to keep eye liner from bleeding up onto eyelids.

2) Apply Jane Iredale Cream To Powder Eyeliner in Black with Jane Iredale eyeliner brush. I like to use a small Q-Tip with a pointed edge to drag the bottom of the line outward to create a more fluid line.

3) Lightly brush on Jane Iredale Longest Lash Mascara in Black Ice to upper lashes only.

4) Living Nature Foundation is applied to even out skin tone, while a loose powder is used to finish the look to knock down shine.

5) Apply Organic Glam Bronzer in Light Bronze to the apples of cheeks to warm up the cheeks and keep the focus on the eyes.

6) Finish the look by applying Vapour Elixer Gloss in Enigma to lips. This sheer gloss will keep the focus on your eyes while giving your lips a gorgeous finish.

CC TIP: When going for a strong defined eyeliner look, always stick with a nice natural gloss or nude shade on the lip. This allows for a more sophisticate look.

Bold brows commanded the eyes of all at Vera Wang, while the hot pink mouth at Marc by Marc Jacobs gave lips life and a powerful blast of color. Perfect for a natural Spring look, these bold brows and lips are the trademark of the season.

1) Apply Couleur Caramel Eye Shadow in Golden Sand #57 all over eye, and add
Couleur Caramel Eye Shadow in Pearly Rosy Brown #4 to the crease.

2) Living Nature Foundation in Pure Buff is applied evenly to skin with Jane Iredale’s foundation brush – made from eco-friendly and skin-friendly taklon.

3) A strong brow is applied by using Jane Iredale Eye Shadow in Charcoal and Dark Suede – from Jane’s Daytime Shadow Kit. I like to use a powder to help draw the brow. This is a great way to ensure that you have more control and makes it easier to build color. My favorite brush for brows is Jane Iredale’s Angle Brush made of taklon/nylon.

4) Organic Glam Bronzer in Light Bronze is applied to the cheeks for a bronzing effect. Using a warmer shade on the cheeks allows the lips to “pop”.

5) Apply Couleur Caramel Lipstick in Glossy Fuschia #207 with a hint of RMS Beauty Lip Balm in center of the lips to keep the lip from becoming too matte.

CC Tip: When mastering a full brow, be sure your brows are freshly plucked so the definition is precise. When filling in your brows with either a pencil or eyeshadow, extend your strokes in an upward angle by placing your ring finger onto the outer edge of the eye while pulling up and outwards to open up your face. A brow going down only adds years to your face.

In The Nude ~ Spring Summer 2010

Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, and Marni nailed down the nude nail trend in their Spring/Summer shows. Not only is it low maintenance (those pesky chips won’t be nearly as noticeable), but the skin-toned colors also give the illusion of daintier digits by seemingly elongating your fingers.

1) Apply Sparitual Nail Color in Inner Sanctum. A perfect nude.

2) Vapour Elixer Gloss in Enigma is a great nude gloss while Honeybee Gardens Lipstick in Karma is the perfect nude lipstick.

CC TIP: When going nude be sure to “not go yellow” in the pigment to avoid looking like a corpse. It is always good to add a hint of pink if needed.

Fall Beauty Trends ~ What Is Hot Now!

As we are now rolling in to the Fall season it is time to consider your makeup application.
The Fall 2009 season was heavily influenced by the 80’s. Bold colors in just about every imaginable shade, focusing on the richer heavier tones. Deep browns, smokey greys, charcoal blacks and rich shades of greens and plums. Mineral quality Metallics are showing up everywhere and have the ability to lift these dark shades outside of themselves. The “HOT” color for fall is focused on the color purple showing up on nails, eyes and even lips. As both Fall and Winter clothes seem to be heavier fabric and more layered, balancing out your look with a heavier and more precise makeup application is the way to go. If you were missing being a distinctive beauty – now is your time. Get creative, allowing yourself the opportunity to experience and play!

Think of Robert Palmer, Stephen Sprouse and Blondie. Smokey eyes, purple liner applied inside, think of lakes and trees, 8 tracks and good times.

Eye Scream ~ Fall Winter 2009

Fall is a glam season for the eyes, as deep, dark, mineral and metallic shades—in matte or shimmer–are layered on with ‘80s abandon. Smoky, sultry gray, black, green, purple, cobalt, copper, and bronze lit up the runways at Marc Jacobs, Gucci and Versace, and the winged eye is back. With this much color on the eyes, if intimidated, keep the mouth muted and the skin clean and fresh.

1) Shade the lids with RMS Beauty Concealer (as a primer).

2) Apply Dr. Hauska Translucent Powder on top, then apply Jane Iredale Eye Shadow Kit (in Khaki) all over the lids.

3) Layer on Jane Iredale Cream to Powder Eyeliner (in Black Brown), using the dark brown as a liner around the eyes. Then apply the green shadow from the Living Nature Eye Shadow Duo (in Ferns) on top and bottom. This creates a deeper intensity and sets the line. Then extend the green eye shadow on top out into a horizontal line moving outward from the eye – creating this dramatic look.

4) To finish, apply Jane Iredale Eye Shadow Kit (in Kiss) under the arch of the brow. (A dab of highlighter here makes the eyes look bigger.) Apply a sheer wash of metallic on top, if you like, for more drama.

5) Apply dark mascara to lashes, from the center to the edges of the eyes.

CC Tip: When applying powder or powder eyeshadow, always tap the brush first to remove excess, and to create a smoother finish.

At Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton, pale, beige, ‘60s-style lips ruled the runways, inspired by the Mary Quant “mods” of Carnaby Street. A soft nude lip is a subtle balance to the season’s big, bold eyes, but watch out–always start with lips that are flawless and smooth.

1) Lips can get dry in fall and winter. For gentle exfoliation, mix
equal parts sugar in the raw and olive oil, and massage into moistened lips with a colorless washcloth—so dyes don’t leach onto your skin—and rinse.

2) Apply RMS Beauty Skin Balm all over the lips. Leave on—it works like a moisturizing mask for the lips—while you apply makeup to the rest of your face. Dab it off when ready to apply lip color.

3) Using your fourth finger, dab RMS Beauty Concealer (in #11) into your lips. The heat of your body “melts” the product on, for a smooth and flawless application.

CC Tip: If beige washes you out, try a muted baby pink to warm up your skin. Or, layer a bit of lip balm or gloss on top (try Almay Pure Blends Lip Gloss in Petal).

Special Eyes ~ Fall Winter 2009

Purple is the “it” color this fall, from almost-black berry lips and nails to a soft wash of lilac or plum on the eyes. This look, from the runways of Versace, is pretty, playful, and goes from soft to smoldering, with an added layer or two of eyeliner.

1) Stroke on Alima Pure Luminous Shimmer Eyeshadow (in Plum) all over the upper lid. Apply Zuzu Luxe Eyeshadow (in Dusk) on top and upward into the brow. Bring the Zuzu down along the lower lashes for an all-over block of color.

2) Take an eyelash curler (I like Shiseido) and curl the lashes. Starting from the middle, apply Couleur Caramel Mascara (in black) outward in both directions.

3) Apply Dr. Hauschka Kajal Eye Liner pencil (in black) across the upper and lower lash lines for a bolder look.

CC Tip: Leave brows unfinished so as not to distract from the bold color on the eyes. If your brows need evening out, lightly fill them in with a matching eyeshadow shade applied with a small brush.
