As we are now rolling in to the Fall season it is time to consider your makeup application.
The Fall 2009 season was heavily influenced by the 80’s. Bold colors in just about every imaginable shade, focusing on the richer heavier tones. Deep browns, smokey greys, charcoal blacks and rich shades of greens and plums. Mineral quality Metallics are showing up everywhere and have the ability to lift these dark shades outside of themselves. The “HOT” color for fall is focused on the color purple showing up on nails, eyes and even lips. As both Fall and Winter clothes seem to be heavier fabric and more layered, balancing out your look with a heavier and more precise makeup application is the way to go. If you were missing being a distinctive beauty – now is your time. Get creative, allowing yourself the opportunity to experience and play!

Think of Robert Palmer, Stephen Sprouse and Blondie. Smokey eyes, purple liner applied inside, think of lakes and trees, 8 tracks and good times.

Fall is a glam season for the eyes, as deep, dark, mineral and metallic shades—in matte or shimmer–are layered on with ‘80s abandon. Smoky, sultry gray, black, green, purple, cobalt, copper, and bronze lit up the runways at Marc Jacobs, Gucci and Versace, and the winged eye is back. With this much color on the eyes, if intimidated, keep the mouth muted and the skin clean and fresh.

1) Shade the lids with RMS Beauty Concealer (as a primer).

2) Apply Dr. Hauska Translucent Powder on top, then apply Jane Iredale Eye Shadow Kit (in Khaki) all over the lids.

3) Layer on <a href="http://www.natureofbeauty.com/xcart/jane-iredale-cream-to_powder-eyeliner.html"target="_blank">Jane Iredale Cream to Powder Eyeliner (in Black Brown), using the dark brown as a liner around the eyes. Then apply the green shadow from the<a href="http://www.saffronrouge.com/living-nature/eye-shadow-duo"target="_blank"> Living Nature Eye Shadow Duo (in Ferns) on top and bottom. This creates a deeper intensity and sets the line. Then extend the green eye shadow on top out into a horizontal line moving outward from the eye – creating this dramatic look.

4) To finish, apply <a href="http://www.natureofbeauty.com/xcart/jane-iredale-nighttime-eyeshadow-kit.html"target="_blank">Jane Iredale Eye Shadow Kit (in Kiss) under the arch of the brow. (A dab of highlighter here makes the eyes look bigger.) Apply a sheer wash of metallic on top, if you like, for more drama.

5) Apply dark mascara to lashes, from the center to the edges of the eyes.

CC Tip: When applying powder or powder eyeshadow, always tap the brush first to remove excess, and to create a smoother finish.

At Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton, pale, beige, ‘60s-style lips ruled the runways, inspired by the Mary Quant “mods” of Carnaby Street. A soft nude lip is a subtle balance to the season’s big, bold eyes, but watch out–always start with lips that are flawless and smooth.

1)	Lips can get dry in fall and winter. For gentle exfoliation, mix
equal parts sugar in the raw and olive oil, and massage into moistened lips with a colorless washcloth—so dyes don’t leach onto your skin—and rinse.

2)	Apply <a href="http://www.natureofbeauty.com/xcart/rms-beauty-lip-skin-balm.html"target="_blank">RMS Beauty Skin Balm all over the lips. Leave on—it works like a moisturizing mask for the lips—while you apply makeup to the rest of your face. Dab it off when ready to apply lip color.

3)	Using your fourth finger, dab <a href="http://www.natureofbeauty.com/xcart/rms-beauty-un-cover-up.html"target="_blank">RMS Beauty Concealer (in #11) into your lips. The heat of your body “melts” the product on, for a smooth and flawless application.

CC Tip: If beige washes you out, try a muted baby pink to warm up your skin. Or, layer a bit of lip balm or gloss on top (try <a href="http://www.almaypureblends.com/Products.aspx?pgid=3"target="_blank">Almay Pure Blends Lip Gloss in Petal).

Purple is the “it” color this fall, from almost-black berry lips and nails to a soft wash of lilac or plum on the eyes. This look, from the runways of Versace, is pretty, playful, and goes from soft to smoldering, with an added layer or two of eyeliner.

1) Stroke on <a href="http://www.alimapure.com/roi/772/Mineral-Cosmetics-Eyes/Luminous-Shimmer-Eyeshadow/"target="_blank">Alima Pure Luminous Shimmer Eyeshadow (in Plum) all over the upper lid. Apply <a href="http://www.natureofbeauty.com/xcart/zuzu-luxe-eye-shadow.html"target="_blank">Zuzu Luxe Eyeshadow (in Dusk) on top and upward into the brow. Bring the Zuzu down along the lower lashes for an all-over block of color.

2) Take an eyelash curler (I like Shiseido) and curl the lashes. Starting from the middle, apply <a href="http://www.natureofbeauty.com/xcart/couleur-caramel-mascara.html"target="_blank">Couleur Caramel Mascara (in black) outward in both directions.

3) Apply <a href="http://www.saffronrouge.com/dr-hauschka/kajal-eyeliner"target="_blank">Dr. Hauschka Kajal Eye Liner pencil (in black) across the upper and lower lash lines for a bolder look.

CC Tip: Leave brows unfinished so as not to distract from the bold color on the eyes. If your brows need evening out, lightly fill them in with a matching eyeshadow shade applied with a small brush.

Leave it to the French to bring back a glamorous rouge baiser at the Yves Saint Laurent and Lanvin fall collections. A bold red pout is intensely sexy and self-assured, but keep your cheek color subtle. Just a hint of peach or pink is enough to warm the skin but not compete with the drama of the mouth.

1)	Apply <a href="http://www.futurenatural.com/index.html?Action=Commerce.Product&ID=256491"target="_blank">Face Boutique Moi Moi Lip Treatment to bare lips with your fingers. It makes the mouth instantly soft and pouty.

2)	Use <a href="http://www.aveda.com/templates/products2/spp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY10578&PRODUCT_ID=PROD13009"target="_blank">Aveda Environmental Retractable Lip Brush to brush on <a href="http://www.natureofbeauty.com/xcart/couleur-caramel-lipstick.html"target="_blank">Couleur Caramel lipstick in Glossy True Red, starting in the middle and brushing outward to the corners of the mouth.

3)	Apply <a href="http://www.natureofbeauty.com/xcart/rms-beauty-un-cover-up.html"target="_blank">RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-up Concealer to outside of lipline with a clean <a href="http://www.aveda.com/templates/products2/spp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY10578&PRODUCT_ID=PROD13009"target="_blank">Aveda Environmental Retractable Lip Brush to keep lipstick from bleeding. Clean the Aveda lip brush once again and dip it into <a href="http://astore.amazon.com/naturalbeauty00-20/detail/B00023AQDQ"target="_blank">Dr. Hauschka’s Translucent Powder, shake off the excess, and brush on top of concealer.

4) Dab <a href="http://janeiredaledirect.com/product_PureGloss_6538.htm"target="_blank">Jane Iredale PureGloss Lipgloss (in Strawberry) on the center of the mouth with fingers. Blend upwards, but don’t get too close to the lipline, as it may bleed.

CC TIP: I love a short-handled synthetic brush like <a href="http://www.aveda.com/templates/products2/spp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY10578&PRODUCT_ID=PROD13009"target="_blank">Aveda’s Environmental Retractable Lip Brush. It fits easily into your purse, it’s animal-friendly, and allows for precise control.

At the Zac Posen and Thakoon shows, the eyes were smokin’. Creating this sexy eye-lock look—‘40s film noir meets modern-day vamp, or vampire, depending on how much is layered on—is easier than it seems, and relies on a simple black, gray, white and metallic mix. For an understated version, lighten it up by using less eye shadow.

1) Apply white eye shadow from <a href="http://www.theorganicpharmacy.com/glam/store/eyes-1/eye-shadow/prod-4.html"target="_blank">Organic Glam Eye Shadow Palette (in Smoky) all over the lids, up to the brows. This will create depth and dimension, and a sort-of “back-lit” effect to the eyes.

2) Layer on the black eye shadow (from the <a href="http://www.theorganicpharmacy.com/glam/store/eyes-1/eye-shadow/prod-4.html"target="_blank">Organic Glam Eye Shadow Palette in Smoky) to the top lids .

3) Line upper and lower lash lines with <a href="http://www.honeybeegardens.com/product/natural-cosmetics/jcel.html"target="_blank">Honeybee Gardens JobaColor Eye Pencil
(in Smoking Gun).

4) Apply <a href="http://www.natureofbeauty.com/xcart/rms-beauty-cream-eye-shadow.html"target="_blank">RMS Beauty Cream Eye Shadow (in Magnetic) to lids, and extend to outer eyes up to the brows.

5) Fill in eyebrow with <a href="http://www.thenatureofbeauty.com/xcart/couleur-caramel-eyebrow_pencil.html"target="_blank">Couleur Caramel Eyebrow Pencil (in color of choice)

6) Stroke on <a href="http://www.natureofbeauty.com/xcart/jane-iredale-longest-lash-mascara.html"target="_blank">Jane Iredale Longest Lash Mascara (in Black Ice) from center to edges of lashes. Curl lashes with Shieseido Eyelash Curler.

CC Tip: When creating a heavy eye apply the eye makeup first, allowing you to wipe off any excess shadow with a makeup removal or baby wipe such as <a href="http://astore.amazon.com/naturalbeauty00-20/detail/B000VUYFN2"target="_blank">Natracare baby wipes.

Intensely deep colors and dark bronze metallics are all over the runways on nails at Christian Dior, Luca Luca and DKNY. Well-manicured is a must with these vampy shades. With deeper shades of polish, I prefer shorter nails—they pack more of a punch.

1) Let the steam from a warm shower soften your cuticles.

2) After the shower, push cuticles back with an orangewood or metal stick. (Please don’t cut the cuticles, they can grow back unevenly.)

3) Massage a cuticle oil or balm (<a href="http://astore.amazon.com/naturalbeauty00-20/detail/B002OFY8YS"target="_blank">Revolution Organics All-Over Body Balm) around (and on top of) the nails. Let it absorb for a few minutes.

4) Apply <a href="http://www.pritinyc.com/636--Wishbone-Flower_p_324.html"target="_blank">Priti Nail Polish (in Wishbone Flower) in vertical strokes from the center of the nail out to the sides. Make sure to stay on the nail, and don’t let the polish bleed into the cuticle bed.

CC Tip: Wipe the nail-polish brush on the side of the bottle to remove excess polish before you apply. It’s less wasteful, and you won’t end up with pools of color by the sides of your nails.
