Food

Food

Face it: You are what you eat. Food is your daily medicine, the fuel for your mind and body, a source of comfort that soothes your soul. The foods we eat and the nutrients we consume determine how healthy and beautiful we are, inside and out. So why would we even think about eating processed and pesticide-ridden foods?

Go green with the foods you eat by eating organic. In agriculture, “organic” means that crops are grown without the use of conventional pesticides, artificial fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, or sewage sludge. Not only are organic foods more delicious, they pack a healthy punch compared with those conventionally grown, as organics contain higher levels of antioxidants, vitamins, and nutrients without chemical and nitrate residues. And organic farming protects the environment, too, by preventing pesticides and other chemicals from passing into the earth, which will in turn threaten our wildlife and water supplies.

To earn a USDA-certified organic seal, farmers must apply, pass a series of rigorous tests and inspections, and pay a hefty fee to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). Today, organic products extend far beyond just fruits and vegetables. You can now find everything from certified organic cold beverages, ketchup, and chips to cereal, mayonnaise, yogurt, milk, and ice cream.

The biggest criticism of organic food is that it often comes with a premium price. Organic foods do typically cost 10 to 40 percent more than conventional products. Prices are higher because organic products are usually produced on a much smaller scale, where they may need to be milled or handled separately. The good news is that the price premium is likely to decrease as the market for organic foods continues to grow.

I enjoy shopping at my local farmer’s market. When you shop locally, you not only eat seasonally, you also reduce the carbon footprint. Be sure to ask if the food is organically grown, especially since not all locally grown produce is certified organic.

By shopping and eating organic, you are actively supporting your health and helping to sustain the environment. And you’re guaranteed to look better, too!
