Skin
On a daily basis, we wash, scrub, condition, depilate, deodorize, and moisturize our skin. We rely on a wide range of products to keep it looking soft, smooth, and radiant. According to a survey conducted by the Environmental Working Group, most Americans use an average of 9 to 15 products, totaling up to 126 distinct ingredients, every day. What if I told you those products and ingredients are not only absorbed into your skin, they have never been regulated for safety?
It’s true. The FDA does not regulate the cosmetic industry, and they even tell us themselves on their website: “The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) does not authorize FDA to approve cosmetic ingredients, with the exception of color additives that are not coal-tar hair dyes. In general, cosmetic manufacturers may use any ingredient they choose, except for a few ingredients that are prohibited by regulation.”
In contrast, the EU regulatory agency, the European Commission, has banned over 1100 chemicals that we continue to use here. Most have been banned in Europe since 2003, leaving the U.S. in the dust when it comes to protecting the health of its citizens. In fact, many of the ingredients already approved by the FDA—i.e., petrochemicals and other problematic synthetics such as phthalates and propylene glycol –are the ones causing the greatest concern. A growing number of studies have shown that these and other cosmetic ingredients may pose health risks to consumers and unborn children.
The skin is our largest organ. It absorbs over 60 percent of what we put on it. So do yourself and your family a huge favor and start shopping for authentically natural and organic skincare and bodycare products. (One thing you may not realize: because of labeling loopholes, you can’t always assume that products labeled “natural” are always safer.) Check ingredient labels for ingredients you’ll want to avoid.
