Clean Up the Clutter

Does Makeup Expire?

Clean Up the Clutter

Discarding Old Makeup is the Real Clean Beauty Move

Have you ever woken up with a strong desire to declutter and deep clean? While our closets often are top of mind for decluttering, I encourage you to think about your makeup and skincare products. After spending many years in beauty and naturally being an inquisitive gal, ready to try the latest and greatest beauty products, I’ve accumulated A LOT of tubes, compacts, sticks, balms, and serums. And while it’s nice to have options, the truth is, makeup expires.  Knowing when to call it quits with that concealer and to toss that clumpy tube of mascara could be key to unlocking your best skin yet.

Do makeup and skincare products expire?

SOS: Save Our Skin!

Once it’s opened, makeup has a limited shelf life due to the introduction of air and bacteria during use. Dabbing our fingertips directly into products or by using a brush or sponge, we introduce germs into our products. Expired makeup can be a breeding ground for harmful microbes, leading to skin irritation and infections.

How to know when your product expires? There’s a tiny jar icon on most beauty products with a number followed by the letter M–this is the PAO or Period After Opening symbol. Once opened, this indicates the number of months the manufacturer/brand recommends the product be used for before discarding.

Discarding expired makeup is not a marketing ploy to get you to buy more products. It’s a matter of safeguarding your skin health. Prolonged use of expired products can lead to clogged pores and acne breakouts.  According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, board-certified dermatologist Cynthia Bailey, MD, FAAD says, “Skin infection is the biggest problem. Over time, bacteria and mold often contaminate makeup. These germs can cause an eye infection or a common skin infection like impetigo or folliculitis.”

When to Oust the Old?

Here’s a quick guide from the American Academy of Dermatology Association to determine when to toss your favorite makeup and skincare products:

Mascara: 3 months

Eyeliner (liquid): 3 months

Eyeliner (pencil sharpened periodically): 2 to 3 years

Eye shadow (powder): 6 to 9 months

Blush (cream): 6 months

Concealer: 1 year

Foundation (liquid): 1 year

Any lip product: 6 months

It can be tricky to determine when to toss that perfectly pink shade of lipstick, especially if you can’t remember when you originally bought it. In addition to the period after opening date, check for these signs that your palette may need to be thrown away:

Clumpy or flaky product consistency (ex. Mascara that is thick and lumpy)

Foul smell

Discoloration or separation of pigments

Feels different on your skin

A Clean Slate

Decluttering both our makeup and skincare products can be heartbreaking. However, a clean makeup bag can lead to less skin irritation and better makeup application. So when in doubt, toss it out!

Forever grateful and rooted in beauty –
