How I Care for my Silver Hair

There was a time when women would dread the first sight of grey hair.

In an attempt to extend youth’s clock, we’d book salon appointments weeks in advance to banish the grey hair that dared to spring from our roots.

I’m happy that the tide is shifting and the days of hiding grey hair are over. If you told me even ten years ago that women would be embracing their silver hair and even going as far as to willingly dye their locks grey, I would have laughed that notion away.

As of late, I’ve let Mother Nature take the wheel and have let my natural silver locks flourish. I’m even contemplating growing my hair long, in the style of Georgia O’Keefe, my all-time style icon. I’m definitely not committed to any particular length, but I am committed to maintaining my hair with the same devotion I do my skin. I’ve discovered a handful of holy grail haircare products that I use daily to keep my silver hair shiny, strong, and hydrated.

Silver Hair Care Products

Start With Suds

When I transitioned to silver, I quickly learned the importance of a good shampoo and conditioner. Innersense has been a favorite of mine since 2008. Among the very first clean hair brands, they hold a special place in my heart. Their Bright Balance Hairbath Purple Toning Shampoo and Bright Balance Purple Toning Conditioner neutralizes brassiness and is ideal for blonde, white, and grey hair.

The Clarity Hairbath is also a great option if you’re seeking a clean hair and scalp care product, but have allergen sensitivities. It contains chufa milk, an amino acid-rich ingredient that promotes elasticity. The Clarity Conditioner is also hypoallergenic and contains top notch ingredients like colloidal oatmeal and manuka honey to calm the scalp and strengthen hair.

Occasionally, I like to use Rahua Color Full Shampoo and Rahua Color Full Conditioner and on days when I need a bit of volume between shampoos, I use Innersense Refresh Dry Shampoo.

Sleek Hair Starts at the Scalp

The secret to a healthy head of hair, no matter the color, starts at the scalp. Once a week, I treat myself to a deep cleanse with Goop G.Tox Himalayan Salt Scrub– it’s a staple that I look forward to using!

Blow 'n' Brush

Ask anyone who’s particular about their hair and they’ll quickly advocate for their favorite blow dryer. While the Dyson has captured the heart and manes of many, I still reach for my Harry Josh blow dryer.

For brushes, you can’t go wrong with the Mason Pearson Brush: they’ve stood the test of time and always will, in my humble opinion. This also goes for the Ibiza Hair G5 brush. Both brushes glide through my hair, detangles effortlessly, and when used with the Harry Josh blow dryer, gives my roots a subtle lift and my rounds my ends to a soft S curl.

My holy grail, my can’t live without is the S-Heart-S Scalp Brush. It lives in my shower and I use it as a detangler brush. After applying conditioner I brush through before rinsing to ensure the conditioner has coated my hair from root to end.

Sleek Serums & Oils

These days, my hair is naturally a bit dry, so to combat dryness, I like to use a little oil to keep it soft and shiny. I find some oils work better when my hair is damp, and some absorb better when my hair is dry. It’s all up to your own hair’s porosity and your personal preference.

As an overnight hair treatment, I mix organic coconut oil with Weleda Rosemary Condition & Shine Hair Oil. and let my hair drink up all the moisture while I sleep. I’d advise not sleeping on your best linens when doing this treatment. In the morning, I rinse out the excess oils and my hair is left super soft and manageable.

I also like to use Augustinus Bader The Hair Oil as it quickly absorbs and is lightweight. To reduce frizz and add shine, Innersense I Create Shine Gloss Serum does the trick.

Silver Hair Recap

So, there you have it! Silky silver hair starts with a combination of the right shampoos, scalp care, blow-drying tools, brushes, and treatments. Incorporating these products and practices into my routine works wonders.

Remember that experimenting is key to finding what works best for you. And let’s face it, it’s always important to love and care for your hair, regardless of its length or color–because that’s what makes it unique and beautiful!
