A Guide to Creams, Powders, & Finding Your Perfect Shade

Blush has always been my secret weapon for adding a rush of color to the face. Today, every brand has their own blush shade and formula; some are cream, some are powder, and some even come in travel-friendly sticks. (Here are all of my favorite blushes of the moment.) Despite being one of the most accessible and affordable makeup products, blush can be a bit intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be.

Blush Basics 101: Cream vs. Powder

Choosing between a cream and a powder blush often depends on your skin type and personal preferences. If you have dry or mature skin, a cream blush might be your best friend. Creams tend to blend seamlessly into the skin, providing a dewy and natural finish. They are also buildable, allowing you to control the intensity of the color.

On the other hand, powder blushes work wonders for those with oily or combination skin. They can help absorb excess oil providing a more matte finish. Powders are generally easier to apply for beginners and offer a wide range of shades.

That being said – your skin type doesn’t necessarily dictate whether you wear cream or powder blush. Both skin types can wear both; it truly depends on your personal preference.

Let’s Get #Shady: Finding the Blush Shade for Your Complexion

Curious which shade of blush to apply?

Here’s a quick guide to finding the perfect blush shade for your skin tone:

Fair Skin: Delicate pinks and light peaches can add a subtle flush.

Olive Skin: Orange-peach or golden-toned blushes to give the skin a natural flush.

Medium Skin: Warm corals and rosy tones enhance a natural glow.

Deep Skin: Bold berries, earthy terracottas, and rich oranges can make a striking statement.

This list above is great for finding your everyday blush shade, but there is always room to play with that hot pink.

A Brush with Blush: Application Techniques

Now that we’ve tackled the cream vs. powder dilemma and embraced the spectrum of blush shades, let’s talk about application techniques.

Creams: Use your fingers for a soft, diffused look. Gently tap the product onto the apples of your cheeks (a little higher if you need a lift) and blend it upwards towards your temples. For a more precise application, a makeup brush can be your best friend.

Powders: Opt for a fluffy blush brush to apply the powder onto the apples of your cheeks. Blend in a circular motion for a more natural finish. A light hand is key–you can always build up the color gradually.

Pro Tip: Smile while applying blush to easily locate the apples of your cheeks. Apply a bit of the powder blush on top of the cream blush for longer wear.

The world of blush is a playground of possibilities. Whether you prefer the texture of creams or the airiness of powders, and regardless of your skin tone, the key is to have fun, always experimenting with a range of shades.
